In June 1944, 21st Army Group set sail for France with the objective of fighting its way from the Normandy beachheads across occupied Europe and on to Berlin. In the years since the end of the Second World War, relatively little detail has been published on the organization of the various formations and units that made up 21st Army Group until now.
This series will examine in detail the authorized War Establishments of every unit that formed part of the British Infantry and Armoured Divisions of 21st Army Group, as well as the specialist Brigades of 79th Armoured Division and the Tank Brigades. Each table will list the composition of the relevant unit, giving a breakdown of personnel by ranks and trades and duties, as well as its transport and weapons. Additional notes will also be provided on known deviations from the official structures outlined and where appropriate the particular types of vehicles and weapons used by units. The first six volumes cover the Infantry and Armoured Divisions, the seventh details the specialist Brigades of 79th Armoured Division, the eighth and ninth the Airborne Divisions.

Collectively the manuals deal with two of the defining weapons of the First World War. The manuals are reprinted in their entirety with enhanced diagrams and illustrations. There are many interesting details revealed including how tanks and machine guns were intended to be used in action, and the care and maintenance of machine guns, especially the Lewis gun. An interesting point is how much the limitations of new weapons, particularly tanks, were recognized at the time and how these limitations were intended to be tactically compensated for.
The introduction provides the historical context for the introduction and use of machine guns and tanks by the British Army, and gives background details of the formation and histories of the Machine Gun Corps and the Tank Corps.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TRAINING OF DIVISIONS FOR OFFENSIVE ACTION 1916 : INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TRAINING OF PLATOONS FOR OFFENSIVE ACTION 1917

Two of the most influential British Army training publications of World War I are published in this book. Instructions For The Training of Divisions For Offensive Action 1916 was originally published in December 1916 - these were the “lessons learnt” from the Somme Battles of that year. Here will be found references of the use of Tanks and Aviation. There is considerable emphasis on the role of Artillery and the need for it to closely co-operate with Infantry. The planning and preparation of operations is discussed in considerable detail. Concern is expressed on the increasing use of hand-grenades, as it was considered that this produced a defensive mentality, emphasis is placed on the use of the bayonet. The use of Infantry support weapons such as the Lewis Gun, Stokes Mortar and Rifle grenade, all of which had first appeared in 1915 are discussed, as is the Medium machine-gun.
Instructions For The Training of Platoons For Offensive Action 1917 was published in early 1917 with a number of diagrams illustrating aspects of the platoon’s role in battle. This publication makes it very clear that the platoon was the “ultimate unit” in the assault. The platoon was considered a self contained tactical unit. The principle of “fire and movement” with the platoon sections equipped with specific weapons to carry out the roles is illustrated. In addition to the tactical instructions there is also a platoon training programme to be used when the unit was not in the front line. The diagrams that appeared in this publication have been re-drawn with the various elements reproduced in colour to enable the reader to clearly see the various sub-units of the platoon, how they were equipped and their use in different types of fighting.
In addition Shaun Corkerry has written an extensive introduction on the Training and Tactics of the British Army in France during World War I together with a bibliography and notes, this explains the development of British tactics during the war and demonstrated how such tactics were developed in the face of the problems faced by the field armies in the trenches.

KAFIR WAR OF 1834-1835

One of the very few eyewitness accounts of this “frontier” war in South Africa. The author was the military secretary to Colonel Harry Smith during the conflict. Smith was a hero of the Peninsular War who later became Governor of South Africa. During the Kafir War 1834-5 he was Chief of Staff to General D’Urban. Operations took place over three months leading to the Kafir defeat and the death of their leader.

A GAZETTEER OF THE SECOND ANGLO-BOER WAR 1899-1902

The result of many years of painstaking research, drawing from Afrikaans, Dutch and English sources and archives, now published to coincide with the centenary of the outbreak of the war. Listing over 1800 locations from cities to farms, mountain ranges to individual koppies, major railway junctions to sidings where military activity took place. Each location is listed under the name used in the war, with details of its variations as well the name in present use. Each entry, giving equal emphasis to both sides, includes details of activity, military significance, and why the same location had a number of different names (ie Hart’s Hill, Inniskilling Hill, Terrace Hill, and Green Hill), there are 14 Rietfontteins, seven Nooitgedachts listed. Exact geo-graphical location is provided by reference to the 1:250,000 series of topo-cadastral maps published by the South African Government Printer, together with a note of the distance from the nearest large centre of population. Each entry contains reference to the main sources in English and Afrikaans, with notes on any relevant maps that can be found within them. This allows the researcher to follow up an initial enquiry with ease. Also included are appendices that detail the locations of all the actions where a Victoria Cross was awarded. Sites of Refugee Concentration Camps for both Black and Boer. Also there are indices that include Boer Commandos, British units and formations (including over 70 Cape, Natal and Transvaal units), as well as Boer and British personalities. For the first time this single volume will easily enable anyone wishing to find out what happened where in this war. An enormous amount of work and research has gone into its production. It is an invaluable reference work, not only for those interested in the war, but also the traveller and armchair tourist.
